This discussion is part of a one-day conference on “Governing the Future. Knowledge and Policy Making” organized by Jenny Andersson (Sciences Po-CERI) and Ariel Colonomos (Sciences Po-CERI). This workshop brings together different scholars from different disciplines who share a common interest in the study and the history of the future as well as in the analysis of the political uses of predictions. The different presentations will underline the role of knowledge, future technologies and expertise. Featured speakers from Sciences Po include: Jenny Andersson, Ariel Colonomos, Ivan Manokha and Jérôme Sgard.

A Professor at Columbia University, Matthew Connelly works in international and global history. His publications include Fatal Misconception: The Struggle to Control World Population (2008) and A Diplomatic Revolution: Algeria’s Fight for Independence and the Origins of the Post-Cold War Era (2002). In addition to publishing in academic journals in the US and in Europe, he has also written articles on foreign policy in The Atlantic Monthly and The National Interest. Matthew Connelly received his B.A. from Columbia (1990) and his Ph.D. from Yale (1997)
