Explore your Interdependence, Saturday 20 October,
Royal Geographical Society, London
In a host of talks, workshops, music, film, art and games, Interdependence Day will explore what it means to live in an interdependent world. For anyone who cares about the earth and the people we share it with. The new and extraordinary challenges that lie before us at the start of the twenty-first century – creeping globalisation, climate change, seemingly unstoppable and impossible to fully comprehend – can appear beyond the control of any one person. Finding ways to take a fresh approach to the defining questions of our time are the inspiration for Interdependence Day 2007.

Chinadependence going up for life in the UK reveals new nef report
Released on Saturday 6 October – the day that the world as a whole went into ecological debt for this year -Chinadependence, revealed the many ways in which Britain is becoming increasingly dependent on the rest of the world to fuel our high-consuming lifestyles. This comes as other research shows that a high quality of life is as easy to achieve at very low levels of consumption as at high levels, and as awareness is growing that the pursuit of high-consuming lifestyles undermines well-being. In particular, Chinadependence reveals a striking rise in our dependence on a wide range of Chinese imports. And, because the greenhouse gas pollution that results from their manufacture is blamed on China, not the consumers in the UK, we are turning China into our ‘environmental laundry’ with devastating consequences for the planet.

Clone Town Britain II: We need your help…
Since nef released the results of the first Clone Town Britain Survey just over two years ago, the debate on the health of our high streets has barely left the spotlight. London’s Evening Standard launched a campaign to save the capital’s small shops, the regulators have been forced into a new inquiry into our biggest supermarkets, and some local authorities have begun to use the powers they do have to stem the march of the Clones, but the take-over of our towns and cities by clone retailers seems to have continued apace. Consolidation in the grocery sector has had knock on impacts in other areas, triggering a spate of mergers in chemists, book-sellers and record shops. It is time to take stock, evaluate, and assess whether Britain is any closer to becoming a nation of clone towns. nef is launching the a new clone town britain survey to find out, and we need your help. download the clone town britain survey form and help us take-stock on the cloned state of the nation
Please return completed survey forms to us as soon as possible, but no later than the end of December 2007.
