Timaeus of Plato

Timaeus was the most widely read book of the Middle Ages after the Bible.

Timaeus is a theoretical treatise of Plato in the form of a Socratic dialogue, written circa 360 BC. The work puts forward speculation on the nature of the physical world. It is followed by the dialogue Critias.Speakers of the dialogue are Socrates, Timaeus of Locri, Hermocrates, Critias. Some scholars have argued that it is not the Critias of the Thirty Tyrants who is appearing in this dialogue, but his grandfather, who is also named Critias. Timaeus was the most widely read book of the Middle Ages after the Bible.

The elements: The term ‘elements’ (stoicheia) was first used by the Greek philosopher Plato in about 360 BC, in his dialogue Timaeus, which includes a discussion of the composition of inorganic and organic bodies and is a rudimentary treatise on chemistry.

Plato assumed that the minute particle of each element had a special geometric shape: tetrahedron (fire), octahedron (air), icosahedron (water), and cube (earth).

See rotating figures above that show these shapes.

Plato’s Timaeus conjectures on the composition of the four elements which the ancient Greeks thought made up the universe: earth, water, air, and fire. Plato conjectured each of these elements to be made up of a certain Platonic solid: the element of earth would be a cube, of air an octahedron, of water an icosahedron, and of fire a tetrahedron. Each of these perfect polyhedra would be in turn composed of triangles. Only certain triangular shapes would be allowed, such as the 30-60-90 and the 45-45-90 triangles. Each element could be broken down into its component triangles, which could then be put back together to form the other elements. Thus, the elements would be interconvertible, so this idea was a precursor to alchemy.

Comment: Plato hold’s Timaeus in his left hand and points upwards with his right in Raphael’s “School of Athens” fresco from 1509. Continue reading PLATO’S TIMAEUS…

Above: A rotating view of the homeodomain bound to DNA

In recent lectures on biolinguistics broadcast on National Public Radio, Professor Noam Chomsky of MIT mentions Hox genes.

Hox genes: Hox genes are a subgroup of homeobox genes.

Since their discovery in 1983, homeobox genes and the proteins they encode, the homeodomain proteins, have turned out to play important roles in the developmental processes of many multicellular organisms. While certainly not the only developmental control genes, they have been shown to play crucial roles from the earliest steps in embryogenesis - such as setting up an anterior-posterior gradient in the egg of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster – to the very latest steps in cell differentiation – such as the differentiation of neurons in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). They have a wide phylogenetic distribution, having been found in baker’s yeast, plants, and all animal phyla that have been examined so far. Since their original discovery, hundreds of homeobox genes have been described. The homeobox was originally described as a conserved DNA motif of about 180 base pairs. The protein domain encoded by the homeobox, the homeodomain, is thus about 60 amino acids long. The first genes found to encode homeodomain proteins were Drosophila developmental control genes, in particular homeotic genes, from which the name “homeo”box was derived. However, many homeobox genes are not homeotic genes; the homeobox is a sequence motif, while “homeotic” is a functional description for genes that cause homeotic transformations.

These excerpts were taken from Bürglin, T.R. (1996) Homeodomain Proteins. In Meyers, R.A. (ed.), Encyclopedia of Molecular Biology and Molecular Medicine, Vol 3., VCH Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, Weinheim, pp. 55-76. Thus, in summary one can say that the homeodomain is a DNA-binding domain that occurs in proteins that are usually transcription factors. These transcription factors regulate the transcription of other genes and hence very frequently play important roles in development of multicellular organisms.

Hox genes:

Hox genes are a subgroup of homeobox genes. In vertebrates these genes are found in gene clusters on the chromosomes. In mammals four such clusters exist, called Hox clusters. The gene name “Hox” has been restricted to name Hox cluster genes in vertebrates. Only genes in the HOX cluster should be named Hox genes. So note: homeobox genes are NOT Hox genes, Hox genes are a subset of homeobox genes.

HOX cluster:

The term Hox cluster refers to a group of clustered homeobox genes, named Hox cluster genes in vertebrates, that play important roles in pattern formation along the anterior-posterior body axis. In fact, the first homeobox genes discovered where those of the Drosophila homeotic gene clusters, i.e. the “Antennapedia complex” and the “Bithorax complex”, which summarily are referred to as HOM-C (homeotic complex). This HOM-C complex in Drosophila is the evolutionary homolog of the vertebrate Hox clusters and the evolutionarily related homeobox gene clusters in other animals (i.e. chordates, insects, nematodes, etc.) are now also called HOX clusters.

homeodomain: a DNA-binding domain, usually about 60 amino acids in length, encoded by the homeobox.

homeobox: a fragment of DNA of about 180 basepairs (not counting introns), found in homeobox genes.

The Scramble for Africa’s Oil

John Ghazvinian

Although Africa has long been known to be rich in oil, extracting it hadn’t seemed worth the effort and risk until recently. But with the price of Middle Eastern crude oil skyrocketing and advancing technology making reserves easier to tap, the region has become the scene of a competition between major powers that recalls the nineteenth-century scramble for colonization there. Already the United States imports more of its oil from Africa than from Saudi Arabia, and China, too, looks to the continent for its energy security.
What does this giddy new oil boom mean—for America, for the world, for Africans themselves? To find out, John Ghazvinian traveled through twelve African countries—from Sudan to Congo to Angola—talking to warlords, industry executives, bandits, activists, priests, missionaries, oil-rig workers, scientists, and ordinary people whose lives have been transformed—not necessarily for the better—by the riches beneath their feet. The result is a high-octane narrative that reveals the challenges, obstacles, reasons for despair, and reasons for hope emerging from the world’s newest energy hot spot.
Biography
JOHN GHAZVINIAN has a doctorate in history from Oxford. He has written for Newsweek, the Nation, Time Out New York, and other publications. Born in Iran and raised in London and Los Angeles, he currently lives in Philadelphia, where he is a visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania

Leading Indicators Report

Friday, April 27, 2007

Please find attached the Leading Indicators report prepared by the Strategic Planning and Research Department of YKB, analyzing the recent trends in production, consumption and expectations.

Best regards

Summary:

  • The GDP data for 2006 indicated that private sector’s demand decelerated considerably during the 3rd quarter and came to halt during the 4th quarter of the year.
Hence, the more-than-expected economic growth stemmed from strong exports during the second half of 2006.
  • All the data which can be considered as leading indicators show that the production and consumption trends during the last quarter of 2006 did not change much during the first quarter of 2007.
  • This suggests that production continued to remain relatively strong in the first 3 months of the year, thanks to record-high levels of exports.
  • Meanwhile, signs of sluggish domestic demand are still persisting, especially in the automotive sector. In fact, car sales continued to decline sharply in the first quarter of the year; while production was strong thanks to robust foreign demand.
  • Consistent with this picture, car loans continued to decline considerably in March, while housing and personal loans showed some acceleration in March. However, it is too early to interpret this data as a sign of trend change in consumer loans.
  • In sum, we think that production dynamics in the first quarter of the year remained similar to those observed in the last quarter of 2006, supporting our GDP growth forecast of 5.4% for 2007.

ABS – NEW HYDROGEN REPORT

Wed, 25 Apr 2007

ABS has just added a new sector to its portfolio of products with the launch of a new report – The Hydrogen Economy Ed 1 2007

  • What is the Hydrogen Economy?
    Is it going to happen?

  • The energy sector of the world is on the cusp of immense change
  • The world’s demand for energy is voracious and increasing
  • Our energy infrastructure is aging and large chunks are at the end of their design life
  • People are becoming aware that the primary energy resource, fossil fuels, is not limitless
  • We are constantly bombarded with catastrophic predictions of global warming
  • So what is the answer?
  • One solution being put forward is to convert from the Carbon Economy which fuelled the Industrial Revolution to a Hydrogen Economy
  • But what is this and will it solve the problems?

Please click here for more information: Hydrogen Economy
